Sex work is broadly defined as the exchange of “sexual services” for compensation, but nuances exist about what a sexual services is depending on cultural, legal, and individual interpretations. Services like exotic dancing, webcam modeling, or performing in adult films, where explicit sexual content is provided as entertainment are considered sexual work; while working on a sex shop, kink club, love motel it’s not. If we use the nature of the services provided to determine who is and who is not a sex worker, who gets the label versus who does it’s extremely arbitrary, unless we take into account the factor or direct explicit sexual interaction and end goal of such service. Some professionals -e.g., sex educators, therapists, or bodyworkers- may work with themes of intimacy and sexuality without being classified as sex workers purely based on the fact that their focus is educational or therapeutic. This means that roles like professional Dommes, sexual surrogates, sensual masseuses, and our Ushers fall under the same category. They -usually- don’t involve sexual or intimate interactions, they just offer sexual guidance and sex knowledge facilitation without direct physical contact with the main goal of helping people. They are doing the same as sex educators, or performers addressing sexual themes in non-exploitative yet commercial [they do receive payment] contexts. Licensed professionals like sex therapists, intimacy coaches, or medical practitioners working within ethical and regulated boundaries work for money too! Now, people pay them for their knowledge, not for sex. Same happens with our Ushers and Tops. ALT’s professionals do not offer direct sexual interaction [activities involving direct physical or sexual engagement], do not offer sexual performances [virtual or otherwise] nor any activity that might fall under the understanding of prostitution or sex work.
We understand that the line between sex work and other forms of intimate or adult-oriented work can be blur in a sex negative society but understanding the context, consent, and intent behind the activities is essential to categorize them accurately and avoid unwarranted stigmatization. We defend the right to sell legal and ethical sexually explicit content, engaging in sexting for pay, or operating an OnlyFans account with adult material. Body autonomy and the right to work shouldn’t be limited, especially when said work is usually the most available option for vulnerable sectors of society. While a big sector of the legal system and society it’s concerned by categorizing a professional, safe interaction intended as a service for payment as sex work, a non-consensual, unpaid personal “romantic” engagement where one of the persons involve is use for one-sided sexual gratification it’s not considered sex work nor exploitation.
