Blood Play
A form of Edge Play, it carries many risks and requires a lot of caution. In this form of play the extraction or sight of blood is the source of enjoyment. For many, seeing, smelling and feeling blood can be an activity that induces a shot of adrenaline that leads them to a state of excitement and trance. In some cases, fake blood or animal blood is used to achieve a similar effect, or in the case of having a partner who menstruates, waiting for their cycle to engage in the practices.
In some cases, the play can also be ritualistic in nature, where blood takes on a different meaning and purpose, said meaning varying from person to person, from dynamic to dynamic. It is closely associated with Knife Play, Needle Play and Impact Play.
Due to its nature, the risk of contamination for the bottom [the person bleeding] is a very real factor. Any item used should be properly sterilized [which is different to disinfection]. Anatomy and placement should also be thought carefully about to avoid blood vessels, nerves or other important structures. A lot of precautions are needed to make sure that contamination doesn’t happen and having a first aid bag is a must. There are also associated risks for the Top [the person doing]; blood can transfer STIs / STDs, but also blood type differences in certain quantities can cause the recipient to become sick. EXTREME CAUTION IS ADVISED.
