Part of Animal Play or Pet Play, is a form of Role Play. Is when the bottom partner takes the role of a pony and the Top partner acts as their Rider or Trainer. This sub pet play it’s perhaps one of the most fetish driven within animal play, the very act of dressing up as a horse -especially a trained horse- involves hands and feet constrained in hooves, masks or blinders, bits, harnesses. Bit gags, bridles, hooves boots, saddles, whips, harnesses, and butt plug tails are all available to complete the pony look. This type of play can also involves different degrees of Impact Play, Bondage and Power Exchange.

There are some variations within pony play:
pony Show : focuses on the fetish costumes. Presentation, style and charisma; ponies must be “well-groomed” to be ready for embodying their role and showing their Trainer’s skills. Individuals who are drawn to the show pony role can be presented at kink events, shows, or parties, in extravagant costumes including harnesses, latex, PVC, or leather bodysuits, masks, plumes, and hoof mitts/boots, and often compete in dressage displays.

pony Cart: focus on the pony's strength and style while pulling a cart with their Trainer on it.

pony Ride: focus on a pony’s strength when allowing their Trainer to "ride" them. This can be extremely dangerous. It is common for the pony to assume a four legged stance with their Rider's legs astride them bearing most of their own weight. Like in other BDSMK plays, pony play costumes and gear can be beautiful and elaborate. Leather pony masks and bridles are simply a twist on typical BDSM harnesses, masks and other gear.

pony Walk: also known as “circus pony”, same as show ponies, a circus pony will also be trained by their Trainer to perform tricks. Whereas a show pony is focused on their image, the circus pony draws pride from the showmanship of their performance and their skilled clean way of doing the tricks.

Stud pony: also known as “breeding ponies”, as the name suggests, stud ponies are used for “breeding” female ponies, this tends to be a visual display with a focus on the sexualised aspect of pony play.

As with all activities containing elements of BDSMK, pony play can carry some risks. From dehydration, circulation, breathing problems, back or neck problems due to ride play to distress, blisters or contact burns for wearing the gear a ponies health can suffer.
