Relational Identity
Refers to how individuals define themselves in terms of their relationships and the structures of their intimate connections. This identity it’s especially important given that it defines the different ways in which people shape their relationships [families] and experience their sexual preferences. It’s an essential aspect of human sexuality that encompasses various ways people engage in romantic and sexual bonds, influencing their sense of self and how they connect with others. Relational identities are diverse and can be understood across a spectrum that includes practices like monogamy, polyamory, polyandry, and polygamy. It includes the recognition and acceptance of different sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, as well as various forms of relationships. It's a combination of person-based and role-based identities, and it's important for individuals to recognize the significance of their own desires and autonomy.
Relational identity is part of the human sexuality spectrum because it reflects the diverse ways people form connections based on their desires, values, and social contexts. It’s not just about who someone is attracted to or loves but also about the structure of those relationships. People may identify with one or more of these practices at different points in their lives, and their relational identity can evolve as their understanding of themselves and their desires deepens. Ultimately, what matters is that these connections are built on mutual respect, consent, and a shared understanding of expectations, whatever relational model they choose.
